Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said her government is prepared to take \u201cextraordinary measures\u201d to protect Italy\u2019s borders, including suspending the Schengen Area with Spain, following the latest migration surge into the North African territory.<\/p>\n
In a post on X, Meloni said Italy would continue to combat illegal immigration, target human trafficking networks and ensure effective repatriations.<\/p>\n
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also backed the proposal, arguing that \u201cirregular and uncontrolled immigration poses a threat to national security.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tajani criticised Spain\u2019s previous decision to grant legal status to more than 500,000 undocumented migrants, claiming the policy encouraged human trafficking and increased pressure on Europe\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n
His comments prompted a sharp diplomatic response from Madrid, with Spain\u2019s Foreign Minister summoning the Italian ambassador over what he described as \u201cinappropriate\u201d remarks.<\/p>\n
The dispute follows a dramatic influx of migrants into Ceuta on Thursday, with hundreds of people swimming around border barriers or using inflatable devices to reach Tarajal beach from neighbouring Morocco. Authorities reported that at least nine people died attempting the dangerous crossing.<\/p>\n
Spain responded by deploying the army to reinforce security after local police and Civil Guard officers struggled to contain the arrivals. Ceuta\u2019s regional government urged Madrid to declare a national emergency, warning that local authorities had become overwhelmed.<\/p>\n
Although Spain\u2019s Interior Ministry initially rejected calls for emergency status, it later authorised military deployment to help restore order. Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez is expected to visit Ceuta as political pressure intensifies.<\/p>\n
European Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner said he remains in close contact with Spanish authorities and stressed that protecting the European Union\u2019s external borders remains a key priority in combating illegal migration. The European Commission has also offered operational support through Frontex.<\/p>\n
The latest crisis has revived memories of the 2021 Ceuta migration emergency, when around 10,000 migrants entered the enclave within two days after border controls temporarily collapsed.<\/p>\n
Spanish and Moroccan authorities have agreed to accelerate the return of migrants, although neither side has released details on the timetable or expected numbers.<\/p>\n
Spain\u2019s Interior Ministry believes human trafficking networks may be exploiting a recent court ruling to encourage more undocumented migrants to attempt the crossing. Moroccan officials also blamed trafficking organisations but denied any suggestion that Rabat was facilitating illegal migration.<\/p>\n
However, Civil Guard sources in Ceuta questioned the level of Moroccan cooperation, arguing that assistance from Morocco\u2019s Gendarmerie has been insufficient despite Madrid\u2019s insistence that bilateral cooperation remains active.<\/p>\n
The growing dispute between Rome and Madrid has placed renewed pressure on European migration policy and could reignite debate over the future of the Schengen free movement system if tensions continue to escalate.<\/p>\n
