The episode has sparked sharp debate about transparency, trust, and the use of wearable cameras by public officials in Greece.<\/p>\n<p id=\"h-what-happened-on-lemnos-and-leros\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What happened on Lemnos and Leros<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Photographs and videos from Georgiadis\u2019s meetings with local residents clearly show him wearing Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. He insisted that no recording took place during the meetings in question. Equally, there is no independent verification that recording did not occur. Citizens had no way to check the device\u2019s memory, the connected app, or the selected operating mode.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a criminal case this uncertainty would not support an accusation. In politics it raises a clear issue of public trust. A person speaking with the minister sees a lens and must guess whether they are simply talking or being recorded as part of the official\u2019s personal security system.<\/p>\n<p id=\"h-the-led-light-is-not-a-legal-safeguard\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The LED light is not a legal safeguard<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Georgiadis pointed to the recording indicator light on the Ray-Ban Meta glasses. When data are collected directly from individuals, they should normally be told the purpose, legal basis, retention period and identity of the controller.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wearing smart glasses in public is not illegal. A legal issue arises only if identifiable people or their conversations are actually recorded without a proper legal basis and without being informed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"h-possible-legal-implications-under-greek-law\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Possible legal implications under Greek law<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the glasses were used to record the content of conversations, Article 370A of the Greek Criminal Code could become relevant. This provision addresses unlawful interference with the secrecy of oral conversations, including certain cases of recording by one participant without the clear consent of the other (as amended by Law 5002\/2022).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The article can only be applied after the fact of recording and the specific circumstances are established. No such evidence has been made public so far. The discussion therefore concerns political risk and the lack of clear rules rather than a proven criminal offence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meetings with the Health Minister are official occasions. Residents may have raised healthcare problems, complaints or other sensitive matters they would not necessarily want stored on a private device.<\/p>\n<p id=\"h-personal-security-versus-public-accountability\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Personal security versus public accountability<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Politicians face real threats, and personal security is a legitimate concern. Yet official protection already exists through security staff, formal protocols and state-controlled systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A personal camera on a minister\u2019s face differs because citizens cannot know who controls the recording, where the material goes, or whether the device is being used in an official or private capacity. A government that has long insisted on strict procedures is now asking the public to rely on one individual\u2019s word.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clear rules could resolve the issue: when a minister may activate recording, how people are informed, where files are stored, who has access, and how long material is kept. So far only informal statements have been offered.<\/p>\n<p id=\"h-part-of-a-familiar-political-pattern\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Part of a familiar political pattern<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not the first time Adonis Georgiadis has found himself at the centre of controversy.
