Conversely, being born in Greece does not automatically confer Greek nationality unless certain legal requirements are met.

Can You Claim Greek Citizenship Through Your Grandparents?

Yes. Greek law provides a pathway for individuals who can establish their Greek ancestry through earlier generations.

According to the Greek government:

“Individuals may establish eligibility through Greek ancestry (e.g. a grandparent/great grandparent), provided that the line of descent is properly documented.”

This provision has allowed thousands of members of the Greek diaspora in countries including Australia, the United States, Canada, South Africa and the United Kingdom to obtain Greek citizenship.

Applicants must provide official documentation establishing their family connection to their Greek ancestor. Depending on individual circumstances, this may include birth certificates, marriage certificates, municipal registration records and other supporting documents issued by Greek authorities.

More Than One Pathway to Greek Citizenship

Although citizenship by descent remains the most common route for members of the diaspora, it is not the only pathway recognised under Greek law.

Greek citizenship may also be acquired through adoption, naturalisation after a period of lawful residence in Greece, or by children born and educated in Greece who meet specific legal requirements.

For most overseas Greeks, however, proving their family lineage remains the key requirement.

A Significant Opportunity for the Greek Diaspora

With an estimated five million Greeks living outside Greece, citizenship by descent provides an important legal and cultural connection to their ancestral homeland.

For many applicants, Greek citizenship not only offers the right to live and work in Greece but also provides access to the rights and privileges associated with citizenship in a member state of the European Union.

The Greek government’s policy remains firmly centred on documented ancestry, making proof of Greek heritage the cornerstone of citizenship applications for members of the global Greek diaspora.

Advertising1

<picture> </picture>

Source link

Greece has reaffirmed that Greek citizenship is primarily based on descent, offering a pathway for millions of people of Greek heritage around the world to claim their nationality through documented ancestry.
