When Conistis opened his first restaurant, Cosmos, in Darlinghurst, he would regularly visit Lamia “to see what was in from Greece.” The deli also stocked more unusual items, such as lamb dripping and tinned flying squid.

Father and son Harry and Jim Cotsinis, who ran the business, attributed the closure to rising operating costs, higher import prices and the broader challenges of recent years. “Like so many small family businesses, the rising cost of doing business, increasing import prices and the challenges of the last few years have made it harder to keep going,” they wrote on the deli’s Instagram page.

Jim Cotsinis has also spoken publicly about the pressure on small business margins and criticised tax changes in the federal budget that he said reduced incentives for owners hoping to eventually sell.

The closure comes amid other losses in Marrickville’s Greek business community. The Greek-owned Fruit Mart on Illawarra Road, a local fixture since 1969, shut in May. While many Greek venues continue to operate in the increasingly multicultural suburb, the loss of long-established specialist stores such as Lamia highlights the challenges facing traditional family-run food businesses.

 Tags:
dolmades, family business closure, Feta, Greek deli Sydney, Greek-Australian business, Harry Cotsinis, Jim Cotsinis, Lamia Super Deli, Little Greece, marrickville, moussaka, Peter Conistis

Source link

Lamia Super Deli, a long-standing Greek food institution on Marrickville Road, has closed its doors after more than half a century of serving the Sydney community.
