Mendoni Rejects Privatisation Claims<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n Culture Minister Lina Mendoni strongly rejected opposition claims that the legislation would allow archaeological sites or monuments to pass into private hands.<\/p>\n \u201cThe ownership of monuments remains entirely with the Greek State, exactly as required by the Constitution, and our cultural heritage continues to be fully protected under Greece\u2019s archaeological law. Full stop,\u201d Mendoni told Parliament.<\/p>\n She accused critics of either failing to read the legislation properly or deliberately misleading the public for political purposes.<\/p>\n State Ownership Remains Unchanged<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n Mendoni stressed that the new state-owned company created under the legislation would serve solely as a management body and would not acquire ownership of monuments or archaeological sites.<\/p>\n She explained that the company would collect revenue on behalf of ODAP, transferring all proceeds directly to the organisation before they are allocated to the Ministry of Culture.<\/p>\n \u201cThe company does not obtain ownership and therefore cannot sell any monuments,\u201d she said. \u201cIt operates entirely within the public sector framework.\u201d<\/p>\n Investment in Cultural Projects<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n The minister also highlighted the government\u2019s ongoing investment in Greece\u2019s cultural infrastructure, noting that more than \u20ac1.5 billion has been allocated to approximately 900 cultural projects currently underway across the country.<\/p>\n She said many of these projects are being carried out directly by the Ministry of Culture, creating employment opportunities within local communities.<\/p>\n During the debate, MPs from both government and opposition parties raised concerns about protecting archaeological sites and preserving cultural assets in their respective regions.<\/p>\n Mendoni sought to reassure lawmakers that existing archaeological legislation would continue to safeguard all monuments and heritage sites.<\/p>\n Underwater Museum on Track<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n The Culture Minister also dismissed reports suggesting that the Museum of Underwater Antiquities had been rejected by the European Union for funding.<\/p>\n She confirmed that the museum is being co-financed by the European Union and national resources, remains on schedule for completion by the end of 2026, and is expected to open to the public in early 2027.<\/p>\n
