Four Seasons has opened its first hotel on Mykonos, welcoming guests for its debut summer season on an island better known for its beach clubs and all night parties than for understated luxury. The resort, set above Kalo Livadi Bay on the island\u2019s southeastern coast, marks the Canadian hospitality group\u2019s second property in Greece, following its Astir Palace hotel in Athens.<\/p>\n

The 94 room, suite and villa resort was designed by Nicos Valsamakis<\/a>, who stands among the most iconic and enduring figures of modern Greek architecture and whose modernist body of work has shaped postwar Athens as much as it has the Aegean coastline. Now in his early hundreds and remarkably still practising from the studio he founded in 1953, Valsamakis is regarded as one of Greece\u2019s most influential architects, known for buildings that favour restraint over spectacle, among them the Amalia Hotel in Olympia and the Alpha Bank headquarters in Athens. For Four Seasons Mykonos, he has drawn on the layout of a traditional Mykonian village, arranging low, whitewashed structures across six hectares of land overlooking the sea rather than building upward or outward in a way that would compete with the landscape.<\/p>\n

The result is a property that leans into the vernacular Mykonos is famous for, cubic white forms, narrow pathways, sea views from nearly every angle, but filtered through a more private, considered lens than the island\u2019s town centre typically offers. Rooms, suites and villas come with plunge pools and private outdoor living spaces, and the resort includes a private beach, four dining venues and a spa and wellness centre. Interiors combine whitewashed walls and minimalist detailing with locally sourced furnishings and d\u00e9cor, a style consistent with the brand\u2019s approach elsewhere but tailored here to the island\u2019s own architectural language.<\/p>\n

The project has been developed with AGC Equity Partners, the international investment firm that has backed a run of Four Seasons openings in recent years, and its arrival adds to a broader expansion of the brand across Greece. Beyond Athens and Mykonos, Four Seasons is also developing a resort and private residences in Porto Heli, on the Peloponnese coast, continuing a pattern of the group building out a network of properties rather than opening in isolation.<\/p>\n

That network approach is deliberate. Hotel management has pointed to the ease of moving between the Athens and Mykonos properties, connected by short domestic flights, ferry services and helicopter transfers, positioning the two hotels as complementary stops on a longer Greek itinerary rather than standalone destinations. It is a structure aimed squarely at travellers who want the culture and gravity of Athens alongside the beach economy of the Cyclades, without sacrificing consistency of service between the two.<\/p>\n

Beyond the resort\u2019s own grounds, Four Seasons has built its Mykonos offering around experiences designed to pull guests away from the island\u2019s more familiar attractions. These include visits to the archaeological sites of Delos and the neighbouring islet of Rhenia, both UNESCO listed and largely undeveloped, guided tours through Mykonos Town\u2019s old quarter, and a range of outdoor activities. The intent, according to the brand, is to present a version of Mykonos that exists alongside its nightlife and beach clubs rather than in place of them, one built around history, landscape and a slower pace.<\/p>\n

Mykonos has spent the past two decades building a reputation as one of the most commercially successful islands in the Mediterranean, drawing celebrity visitors, luxury retailers and a summer economy that rivals far larger destinations. A Four Seasons opening on the island signals continued confidence in that market, but the resort\u2019s design philosophy, understated, low rise, rooted in local architectural tradition, suggests an attempt to carve out a different register within it. Whether that quieter positioning holds against the island\u2019s louder reputation will likely become clearer as the season progresses.<\/p>\n
