How a $40-a-week baker from Stockton built America\u2019s largest apartment empire, bought the Chargers, and spent his life trying to win his father\u2019s approval<\/h3>\n

Alex Spanos built the largest apartment empire in America, bought an NFL team and became one of the most recognisable Greek American success stories of the twentieth century. Most people know that part of him. What may be less familiar is the part that made him that way: a gruelling childhood in his father\u2019s bakery that shaped almost every decision he made afterwards, as Spanos himself later described in his own autobiography.<\/p>\n

To most people, the Spanos story is a clean one. Born in Stockton, California in 1923 to Greek immigrant parents, he grew into a self-made billionaire, the top apartment builder in the nation, and the owner of the San Diego Chargers<\/a>. He gave away tens of millions of dollars to hospitals, universities and disaster relief. He was close friends with Bob Hope, a fixture at Republican fundraisers, and a man whose name now sits on stadiums and community centres from California to the Central Valley. Arnold Schwarzenegger called him a man who \u201clived the American Dream\u201d after his death in 2018 at the age of 95.<\/p>\n

That version of the story is true, but it is also incomplete.<\/p>\n

In his 2004 autobiography Sharing the Wealth<\/em>, Spanos laid out a fuller account of his life himself. The book opens not with ambition or opportunity, but with fear. His father, Constantinos \u201cGus\u201d Spanos, ran a lunch counter and bakery on Stockton\u2019s old skid row, and from the age of eight, Alex was up at four in the morning baking bread and pastries before school. Sport, the thing he loved most as a boy, was never an option. \u201cWe never had a chance to get involved in sports,\u201d he later told the Sacramento Bee, because the brothers were needed at the ovens.<\/p>\n

Discipline in the Spanos household was physical and constant. Spanos wrote that he and his brothers were frightened of their father, who they said, never once hugged them as boys or congratulated them as men. It was, in his own telling, a standard method of raising children in a Greek immigrant household of that era, but it left a mark that decades of success seemingly never fully erased.<\/p>\n

By 1951, Spanos was 27, married with one child and a second on the way, and still earning $40 a week in his father\u2019s bakery. When he asked for a raise to match what other bakers in town were paid, his father refused. Spanos walked out of the family business and never went back. He borrowed $800 from a friend, bought a used catering truck, and started driving out before dawn to sell sandwiches to migrant farm workers in the fields of the Central Valley, at an hour when no one else in Stockton bothered to show up.<\/p>\n

What followed is the part of the story many people may know. The sandwich run grew into a catering operation, then into housing for the workers he was feeding, then into full apartment complexes. A.G. Spanos Companies<\/a> eventually built more than 120,000 apartments across the country and became the largest privately held apartment developer in the United States. By 2004, Forbes put his fortune at 1.1 billion US dollars. In 1984 he bought the San Diego Chargers, fulfilling what he called a lifelong ambition, and turned his private box into a second home for celebrities and politicians, Bob Hope chief among them. The two men golfed together for more than three decades and were, by Spanos\u2019s own account, vaudeville dance partners at charity events, an unlikely image of a Stockton baker\u2019s son cutting steps on stage with one of Hollywood\u2019s biggest stars.<\/p>\n

What almost never made the news coverage of his life is what never changed, at least by Spanos\u2019s own telling. He wrote that he felt he owed his success to his father, driven less by gratitude than by a need to prove himself. But his father never lived to see his biggest achievement: Constantinos Spanos died in 1976, eight years before his son bought the Chargers. Of the years in between, Spanos wrote plainly: \u201che never told me that he was proud of me.\u201d <\/p>\n

Despite his worldly success, Spanos never left Stockton. For all the money, the private jet, the Super Bowl runs and the friendships with presidents, Spanos kept his home in the same Stockton valley where he once sold sandwiches out of a truck. <\/p>\n

He funded scholarships at the University of the Pacific, donated 500,000 dollars to restore Stockton\u2019s old Fox Theatre, renaming it after Bob Hope, and wrote a million-dollar cheque to the Red Cross when floods hit San Joaquin County. He also sent his own private jet to Cambodia to bring home a badly burned Stockton woman after hearing she needed help. Craig Prosser, a former television reporter who was on that flight, said of him: \u201cHe always came through when there was a need in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is tempting to read the Spanos story as a straightforward rags to riches arc, the kind that Forbes and New York Times profiles are built on. The more interesting version however, by Spanos\u2019s own account, is one where the success was never really about the money, but about a boy who worked before dawn in his father\u2019s bakery built an empire, bought a football team, danced with one of the most famous entertainers alive, and still, in his own words, spent much of his life driven by a need for approval he never quite got to hear.<\/p>\n
