The Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence (KYSEA) has given the green light to a major package of defence contracts that form part of the Armed Forces\u2019 long-term procurement programme.<\/h4>\n <\/source><\/picture>Defence Minister Nikos Dendias announces KYSEA approval of Achilles Shield multi-layer defence system.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
Defence Minister Nikos Dendias<\/strong> announced the decisions on Thursday, confirming that a significant portion of Agenda 2030<\/strong> has now been approved.<\/p>\n
Achilles\u2019 Shield \u2013 Greece\u2019s New Multi-Layer Defence System<\/h3>\n
At the centre of the approvals is Achilles\u2019 Shield<\/strong>, an integrated anti-aircraft, anti-ballistic and anti-drone system.<\/p>\n
Dendias described it as a series of interconnected protective layers linked by a single command-and-control system. Greek defence industry participation in the programme is valued at \u20ac700 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
The system collects data from all available sensors \u2014 including helmet-mounted sights used by Army personnel \u2014 processes and prioritises threats, and proposes responses. According to the Minister, it transforms the Armed Forces \u201cfrom the old model of personnel and systems into a modern machine capable of collecting and processing all data and responding to all challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to Achilles\u2019 Shield, KYSEA approved the following:<\/p>\n
\n
Non-kinetic systems for countering unmanned vessels<\/li>\n
The HERON 1<\/strong> unmanned vessel system<\/li>\n
Small SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar)<\/strong> satellites providing immediate satellite imagery under full national control<\/li>\n
Class II Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, including ten additional V-BAT<\/strong> systems<\/li>\n
Night-vision goggles as standard combat equipment for soldiers<\/li>\n
Three new Embraer C-390 Millennium<\/strong> transport aircraft (first delivery expected in 2027). The aircraft are being acquired through a bilateral agreement with Portugal and can also act as aerial tankers<\/li>\n
Ten special-operations underwater vehicles (eight to be built at Skaramangas shipyards, two in the United Kingdom)<\/li>\n
Upgrade of four MEKO<\/strong> frigates with advanced anti-submarine warfare systems<\/li>\n
HELLFIRE<\/strong> laser-guided missiles to enhance the strike capability of Apache attack helicopters<\/li>\n
Postgraduate study programmes in the United States focused on autonomous systems and artificial intelligence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Next Steps<\/h3>\n
Dendias stated that \u201ca major part of Agenda 2030 was approved today\u201d but added that \u201cwe are not finished yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
In September, the second phase of the new Force Structure will be presented, along with developments in the long-term defence procurement programme covering the period 2027\u20132037<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
