An Australian academic and her partner have died following a tragic road accident on the Greek island of Lesvos, prompting an outpouring of grief from colleagues, students and loved ones in both Australia and Greece.<\/p>\n
Professor Marguerite Johnson<\/strong>, 61, and her partner Leni Johnson<\/strong> were travelling along the Panagiouda\u2013Moria road<\/strong> on July 15<\/strong> when their vehicle reportedly struck a lamppost before overturning.<\/p>\n According to local reports, one of the women died at the scene, while the other succumbed to her injuries after being transported to hospital.<\/p>\n Images from the crash site showed the vehicle with extensive front-end damage and a shattered windscreen. The collision reportedly occurred near the location of another fatal crash that claimed the lives of two teenagers only weeks earlier.<\/p>\n Professor Johnson was an Honorary Professor of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Queensland. She spent much of her academic career at the University of Newcastle, where she served as Professor of Classics before retiring in 2024.<\/p>\n Widely recognised as one of Australia\u2019s leading scholars of the ancient world, Johnson\u2019s research on classical literature, gender and sexuality earned international respect. Her death has been met with heartfelt tributes from universities, academic organisations and former students.<\/p>\n The Australasian Women in Ancient World Studies<\/strong> said it was \u201cshocked and saddened\u201d by her passing, describing her as a brilliant scholar, generous mentor and compassionate colleague whose influence extended across generations of students.<\/p>\n The Australian Academy of the Humanities<\/strong> also expressed its deep sadness, calling Johnson a distinguished cultural historian whose work significantly advanced the study of the ancient world.<\/p>\n Former students remembered her not only for her academic brilliance but also for her warmth and generosity.<\/p>\n \u201cMarguerite was my Honours and PhD supervisor, mentor and friend,\u201d one former student wrote. \u201cShe was brilliant, kind, endlessly curious and treated her students like family.
