Greece is expected to take a major step forward in modernising its air defences, with the Government\u2019s top national security body, KYSEA, reportedly preparing to approve a \u20ac3 billion procurement package<\/strong> for Israeli-made air defence systems.<\/p>\n According to Greek media reports, KYSEA is scheduled to meet on July 23<\/strong> to give final approval for the acquisition, which forms part of the ambitious Achilles Shield<\/strong> integrated air and missile defence programme.<\/p>\n The package is expected to include a range of advanced Israeli systems, including Rafael\u2019s SPYDER<\/strong>, David\u2019s Sling<\/strong>, and the Barak MX<\/strong> air defence system developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n If approved, the decision would pave the way for one of Greece\u2019s largest defence modernisation initiatives in recent years, creating a layered air and missile defence network designed to protect the mainland and the islands from a wide spectrum of threats, including ballistic missiles, combat aircraft, cruise missiles and drones.<\/p>\n Greek officials have previously described Achilles Shield as a next-generation defensive network that will significantly enhance the country\u2019s ability to detect, intercept and respond to modern aerial threats.<\/p>\n Following KYSEA\u2019s approval, a senior delegation from Israel\u2019s Ministry of Defence is expected to travel to Athens to finalise and sign the relevant contracts.<\/p>\n The programme reflects the deepening defence cooperation between Greece and Israel, which has expanded considerably in recent years through joint military exercises, defence technology partnerships and strategic security agreements.<\/p>\n The acquisition is also expected to draw attention from neighbouring T\u00fcrkiye, particularly if elements of the new air defence systems are deployed on islands in the eastern Aegean.
