Under <strong>EU Regulation 2019\/1157<\/strong>, old identity cards without a <strong>Machine-Readable Zone (MRZ)<\/strong> will no longer be valid as travel documents for trips abroad (including within the EU\/Schengen Area).<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-key-points-on-travel\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Points on Travel<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Old blue-style Greek IDs <strong>cannot<\/strong> be used for international travel after this date.<\/li>\n<li>You will need a <strong>valid passport<\/strong> or a <strong>new biometric Greek ID card<\/strong> for travel.<\/li>\n<li>This rule applies EU-wide to non-compliant IDs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"h-use-in-greece-public-services-amp-transactions\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use in Greece (Public Services &amp; Transactions)<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Old IDs remain acceptable for most domestic purposes <strong>until September 2027<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>A recent extension allows their limited use (until <strong>September 25, 2027<\/strong>) specifically for <strong>remote electronic identification<\/strong> procedures when issuing trust service certificates (e.g., certain digital signatures or e-services).<\/li>\n<li>This extension also covers IDs of Armed Forces\/Security Forces members and valid residence permits for third-country nationals.<\/li>\n<li>After September 2027, old IDs will no longer be accepted for any transactions with the Greek State. Citizens must have the new ID.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"h-how-to-get-a-new-greek-id-card\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Get a New Greek ID Card<\/h3>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pay the fees first<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Standard fee: <strong>\u20ac10<\/strong> (covers issuance, printing, personalization, and secure delivery).<\/li>\n<li>Reduced fee for large families: <strong>\u20ac5<\/strong> (with proof).<\/li>\n<li>Plus a <strong>\u20ac0.50<\/strong> Greek Police stamp.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Book an appointment online<\/strong> via the competent Police Department (based on your residence) through gov.gr or the relevant platform. If slots are full locally, you can choose another station.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Visit in person<\/strong> (mandatory):<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Application and data verification from the Citizens\u2019 Registry.<\/li>\n<li>Photo: Taken on-site or via a certified photographer using the <strong>myPhoto<\/strong> platform on gov.gr (you\u2019ll get a code linked to your AFM\/Tax ID).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New IDs include enhanced security features and are valid for 10 years (or less in some cases, e.g., for minors).<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-recommendations\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recommendations<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you plan to travel abroad soon, apply for a <strong>new ID<\/strong> or <strong>passport<\/strong> immediately, as demand is high and appointments may fill up.<\/li>\n<li>Old IDs without an expiration date are still valid domestically for now, but don\u2019t delay replacement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the most up-to-date official guidance, check <strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gov.gr\">gov.gr<\/a><\/strong> or contact your local Police Department\/Issuing Authority.
