Fifty-two years after Turkey\u2019s invasion of Cyprus on 20 July 1974, the occupation of more than one third of the Republic of Cyprus remains a critical issue not only for Cyprus and Greece, but increasingly for Israel as well.<\/h4>\n

The Turkish Occupation of Cyprus Will End. Ankara Can Still Choose the Manner, Not the Outcome.<\/p>\n

On 20 July 1974, Turkey invaded the Republic of Cyprus.<\/p>\n

Fifty two years later, it still occupies more than a third of the sovereign territory of a European Union member state.<\/p>\n

In a strongly worded post, Israeli strategist Shay Gal<\/strong> (@ShayGal84) declared that the Turkish occupation of northern Cyprus is unsustainable and will eventually end. He stressed that Ankara can still choose the manner of its withdrawal \u2014 but not the final outcome.<\/p>\n

Gal described the occupied north as Turkey\u2019s military bridgehead in the Eastern Mediterranean, housing around 40,000 troops along with significant armour, artillery, drones, and infrastructure. He argued that this presence threatens not only Cyprus and Greece, but also Israel\u2019s maritime routes and strategic interests.<\/p>\n

\u201cPoseidon\u2019s Wrath\u201d Doctrine<\/h3>\n

The analyst referred to the trilateral (and now quadrilateral) cooperation between Israel, Greece, Cyprus, and France<\/strong> as \u201cPoseidon\u2019s Wrath<\/a>\u201d \u2014 a joint defence understanding that treats the occupied north, Turkish maritime actions, and regional threats as a single theatre of operations.<\/p>\n

He outlined two possible paths for Turkey:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Negotiated withdrawal<\/strong> \u2014 Complete removal of all Turkish troops, weapons, and settlers from Cyprus, allowing the island to reunite under the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus.<\/li>\n
  2. Removal by force<\/strong> \u2014 If Ankara refuses to withdraw voluntarily, it risks military confrontation involving Israel, Greece, Cyprus, and France.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Gal warned that Cyprus could invoke Article 42(7) of the EU Treaty, obliging other member states to provide assistance, while NATO\u2019s Article 5 would not apply to a conflict initiated by Turkey over occupied territory.<\/p>\n
