Volunteers monitoring the area spotted the tiny tracks left by the hatchlings heading toward the sea in the early hours of Tuesday, 14 July.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-greece-a-critical-sanctuary-for-loggerhead-turtles\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Greece: A Critical Sanctuary for Loggerhead Turtles<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greece hosts the largest known nesting population of loggerhead sea turtles in the Mediterranean. Every summer, thousands of female turtles come ashore on Greek beaches to lay their eggs. Daily patrols are currently active across nearly 100 kilometres of coastline, covering key nesting areas including:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Laganas Bay, Zakynthos<\/li>\n<li>Kyparissia Bay<\/li>\n<li>Koroni<\/li>\n<li>Lakonian Gulf<\/li>\n<li>Rethymno and Chania, Crete<\/li>\n<li>Messara Bay, Crete<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"h-growing-challenges-for-nesting-beaches\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Growing Challenges for Nesting Beaches<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The emergence of the first hatchlings comes at a time when loggerhead nesting beaches face increasing pressure from tourism, coastal development, and climate change. Conservationists continue to work around the clock to safeguard nests from human disturbance, light pollution, and natural predators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ARCHELON<\/strong> urges beachgoers and tourists to respect protected areas, keep beaches clean, and avoid using lights near nesting zones during the hatching period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The successful hatching on Zakynthos is a hopeful sign for the 2026 season.
