The nesting season for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta<\/em>) is underway in Greece, with the first hatchlings of the year emerging on Zakynthos, one of the Mediterranean\u2019s most important nesting sites.<\/h4>\n

According to the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece (ARCHELON<\/a><\/strong>), the initial nest hatched on Dafni Beach<\/strong> in Laganas Bay, Zakynthos. Volunteers monitoring the area spotted the tiny tracks left by the hatchlings heading toward the sea in the early hours of Tuesday, 14 July.<\/p>\n

Greece: A Critical Sanctuary for Loggerhead Turtles<\/h3>\n

Greece hosts the largest known nesting population of loggerhead sea turtles in the Mediterranean. Every summer, thousands of female turtles come ashore on Greek beaches to lay their eggs. The successful emergence of these first hatchlings marks the beginning of a new generation facing the long and dangerous journey to the open sea.<\/p>\n

ARCHELON teams, working in close cooperation with the Hellenic Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (N.E.C.C.A.<\/strong>), have intensified their efforts to protect the nests. Daily patrols are currently active across nearly 100 kilometres of coastline, covering key nesting areas including:<\/p>\n
