According to data from the NKUA Seismology Laboratory, seismic activity around the volcano remains almost non-existent, with no current indications of danger from volcanic activity.<\/p>\n
Nisyros Mayor Christofis Koronaios announced that cooperation between the municipality and the Seismology Laboratory of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment at NKUA continues with the goal of creating an internationally recognised Volcanic Observatory.<\/p>\n
The observatory aims to provide continuous, multi-parameter monitoring of the volcano using advanced scientific methods.<\/p>\n
New Station Joins National Seismic Network<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n During an NKUA scientific team visit to Nisyros from July 2 to 5, researchers carried out maintenance, inspections and upgrades to the island\u2019s seismic monitoring network, which has operated since September 2023.<\/p>\n The team also installed the new permanent seismic station HA.EMPO at the Old Primary School of Emporeios, which houses the Volcanic Observatory.<\/p>\n The station has now joined Greece\u2019s National Unified Seismograph Network, significantly improving real-time monitoring of seismic activity on Nisyros and the surrounding region.<\/p>\n The station\u2019s data are available in real time to the scientific community, while researchers use modern analysis techniques and artificial intelligence systems to detect even extremely weak micro-earthquakes.<\/p>\n Nisyros Becomes International Volcano Research Hub<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n Mayor Koronaios said Nisyros is steadily developing into an international reference point for volcanic research.<\/p>\n He highlighted that the creation of the Volcanic Observatory will improve public safety, strengthen the island\u2019s scientific presence worldwide and create new opportunities for educational, conference and thematic tourism.<\/p>\n The mayor also thanked NKUA and the scientists involved in the project for their continued cooperation and contribution to the initiative.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n
