Archaeologists have unearthed a monumental ancient swimming pool at the historic site of Tralleis in western Turkey, a city with deep Hellenic roots dating back to the classical era.<\/h4>\n
The impressive rectangular basin, described as \u201cOlympic-scale\u201d by researchers, measures 37 metres in length, 12 metres in width, and 1.5 metres in depth<\/strong>. With a capacity for roughly 300 swimmers<\/strong>, it stood as the highlight of a sprawling 40,000-square-metre<\/strong> bath-gymnasium complex.<\/p>\n Excavations led by Professor Murat \u00c7ekilmez<\/strong> of Ayd\u0131n Adnan Menderes University have now fully revealed the structure\u2019s layout and advanced hydraulic systems following the careful removal of sediment during the latest dig season.<\/p>\n Positioned at the heart of the bathing complex, the open-air pool functioned as a cold-water plunge where citizens could swim and refresh themselves after using the heated chambers typical of Roman baths. It also served the adjacent gymnasium<\/strong>, where young people received comprehensive athletic, intellectual, and social training \u2014 a hallmark of Greek educational tradition that continued under Roman rule.<\/p>\n Professor \u00c7ekilmez emphasised the pool\u2019s exceptional size and its importance for both everyday recreation and organised physical education.<\/p>\n \u201cBy ancient standards, its proportions are Olympic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Water was supplied via an elaborate 56-kilometre<\/strong> aqueduct system bringing fresh spring water from the northern mountains. Efficient drainage channels allowed the pool to be rapidly emptied, cleaned, and refilled, ensuring high standards of hygiene in a heavily used public facility. Left open to the sky, the pool provided welcome relief during the intense heat of western Anatolia\u2019s summers.<\/p>\n Tralleis occupies a commanding plateau overlooking the B\u00fcy\u00fck Menderes (Maeander) Valley. Ancient traditions connect its founding to Thracian and Argive settlers<\/strong> \u2014 linking the city directly to the Greek Peloponnese. Alexander the Great captured Tralleis in 334 BCE<\/strong>, after which it passed through the Hellenistic successor kingdoms before reaching its zenith under Roman administration.<\/p>\n The bath-gymnasium complex suffered damage in a major earthquake in 26 BCE<\/strong> and was subsequently restored with generous support from Emperor Augustus. In honour of this imperial patronage, the city temporarily adopted the name Caesarea<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The ongoing excavations are conducted under Turkey\u2019s Heritage for the Future<\/strong> programme.
