The European Commission will unveil a proposal after the summer to introduce age-appropriate restrictions on children\u2019s access to social media platforms, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced.<\/p>\n
Speaking after receiving an expert report on protecting children online, von der Leyen emphasised the need for a balanced approach that prioritises young people\u2019s development.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThis is not about whether children can access social media. It is about whether and when social media can access our children,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
She added that the Commission is considering \u201ca phased and gradual access for different age ranges.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
Protecting Real-World Development<\/h3>\n
Von der Leyen stressed the importance of giving children time away from digital platforms:<\/p>\n
\n\u201cOur children need time in the real world. Time to play, time to build friendships, time to make mistakes. Time to shape their own identity, their own personality, before an algorithm shapes them instead.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Growing Momentum Across Europe<\/h3>\n
Several EU member states, including Greece<\/strong>, have shown strong interest in protecting children from the negative effects of social media. France, Austria, and Slovenia are among the countries that have already introduced or are preparing legislation for age-based restrictions.<\/p>\n
The United Kingdom<\/strong> announced last month that children under 16 will be banned from social media from early 2027, while Australia<\/strong> became the first country to implement an under-16 ban in December 2025.<\/p>\n
The Irish Government has expressed support for restrictions but prefers an EU-wide solution.<\/p>\n
The European Commission\u2019s upcoming proposal is expected to pave the way for coordinated action across the bloc, with Greece likely to align with the common European framework to safeguard younger generations.<\/p>\n
