This approach is not limited to Disney.<\/strong><\/p>\nThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has made inclusion and representation a central part of its industry initiatives, including its Representation and Inclusion Standards, which aim to encourage broader participation and reflect the diversity of global audiences.<\/p>\n
Hollywood has increasingly argued that representation provides communities with visibility, creates opportunities for performers and filmmakers, and allows audiences to experience cultures through authentic voices.<\/p>\n
The principle has become one of the defining ideas of modern filmmaking.<\/p>\n
But this creates an important question.<\/p>\n
If representation matters for Polynesian culture, Indigenous cultures, African cultures, Asian cultures and other communities around the world, why is it suddenly treated differently when Greeks raise similar concerns?<\/p>\n
The Greek argument is not about ownership<\/strong><\/p>\nMany Greeks who criticised the casting approach for The Odyssey<\/em> have not argued that Greek mythology belongs exclusively to Greeks.<\/p>\nGreek myths have inspired artists, writers and filmmakers around the world for thousands of years.<\/p>\n
Nor have critics argued that only Greek actors can portray Greek characters.<\/p>\n
The argument is about participation and recognition.<\/p>\n
The Odyssey<\/em> is not simply another fantasy adventure. It is one of the foundational works of world literature, created within the Greek cultural tradition and connected to Greek history, geography and identity.<\/p>\nUNESCO recognises the global significance of Greek classical heritage, including sites such as Mycenae and Tiryns, which UNESCO describes as being directly connected with the Homeric epics and the world of The Iliad<\/em> and The Odyssey<\/em>.<\/p>\nGreek civilisation over the last 3,000 continuous years \u00a0has influenced philosophy, literature, democracy, science and the arts across the world.<\/p>\n
For many Greeks, the question is straightforward:<\/p>\n
If Hollywood believes communities deserve meaningful representation when their cultures inspire major films, why should Greek culture be treated as an exception?<\/p>\n
And to those claiming it\u2019s \u201cjust fiction\u201d don\u2019t parade your ignorance so proudly.
