The matter will go to the Council of the European Union, where member states must take a political decision to give the green light for Cyprus\u2019s full accession.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-cypriot-government-response\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cypriot Government Response<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news prompted an internal memo at the Cypriot <strong>Ministry of Foreign Affairs<\/strong>, signed by <strong>Philippa Karsera Christodoulides<\/strong>, Head of the Directorate for Schengen and Consular Affairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Key points from the memo (as reported by ANT1):<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The current stage is described as <strong>\u201cvery critical\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It recommends a <strong>\u201ccoordinated, steady and well-documented diplomatic effort\u201d<\/strong> so that Cyprus\u2019s technical progress can be converted into a <strong>political decision<\/strong> by the other member states.<\/li>\n<li>Nicosia is satisfied with the report\u2019s positive assessment of controls along the <strong>Green Line<\/strong>, which are deemed <strong>\u201cadequate\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"h-caveats-in-the-eu-report\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Caveats in the EU Report<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Commission report does not ignore Cyprus\u2019s unique situation. It notes the impact of:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>ongoing occupation<\/strong> of northern Cyprus<\/li>\n<li>The existence of the <strong>British Sovereign Base Areas<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These factors are stated to affect the island\u2019s <strong>internal security<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the British bases specifically, the report calls for <strong>updating and strengthening cooperation<\/strong> with the Republic of Cyprus authorities to meet Schengen requirements \u2014 particularly regarding <strong>irregular migration<\/strong>. This includes:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Controls at the two roadblocks managed by the British bases<\/li>\n<li>Rules for the circulation of British military personnel and their families in the Schengen Area after Cyprus joins<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"h-background\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Background<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2021, Cyprus has responded positively to <strong>120 recommendations<\/strong> as part of its technical preparation for Schengen accession.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio  is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"\/>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cyprus has cleared the major <strong>technical hurdle<\/strong> according to the European Commission. The next (and final) step is <strong>political approval<\/strong> by the other Schengen\/EU member states.
