Police said the legal fare for the trip should have been approximately <strong>\u20ac4<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Authorities said criminal charges and administrative fines were issued against all four drivers.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-taximeters-allegedly-concealed\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taximeters allegedly concealed<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigators allege the drivers targeted tourists arriving at the port, taking advantage of visitors unfamiliar with local taxi fares.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greek media reported that in some cases the taximeters were either switched off or deliberately covered with objects, including towels, preventing passengers from seeing the actual fare during the journey.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"ru\" dir=\"ltr\">\u041b\u0430\u0432\u0440\u0438\u043e: \u0442\u0430\u043a\u0441\u0438\u0441\u0442\u044b \u0431\u0440\u0430\u043b\u0438 \u0441 \u0442\u0443\u0440\u0438\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0432 \u0432\u0442\u0440\u0438\u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0433\u0430 \u0438 \u043f\u0440\u044f\u0442\u0430\u043b\u0438 \u0442\u0430\u043a\u0441\u043e\u043c\u0435\u0442\u0440\u044b <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8lIIqDOvTz\">pic.twitter.com\/8lIIqDOvTz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Athens News (@russianathens) <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/russianathens\/status\/2074961417417941118?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 8, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One driver is also accused of refusing to provide identification to police officers and attempting to evade arrest through dangerous driving manoeuvres.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-licences-confiscated\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Licences confiscated<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police confiscated the drivers\u2019 licences and special taxi permits, while the taxis involved were taken off the road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The four suspects were brought before the Athens Misdemeanour Prosecutor under the expedited legal process and face charges relating to excessive fares, as well as additional offences including disobedience and dangerous driving where applicable.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-series-of-taxi-scams\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Series of taxi scams<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lavrio arrests come amid a string of high-profile complaints involving taxi drivers in Athens and Attica.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this week, passengers accused a taxi driver at <strong>KTEL Kifisos<\/strong> of refusing to use the taximeter, demanding <strong>\u20ac80<\/strong> for a journey to <strong>Piraeus<\/strong>, and abandoning them on the roadside after they refused to pay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In another recent case, a taxi driver was arrested after allegedly charging tourists <strong>\u20ac175<\/strong> for a journey from <strong>Athens International Airport<\/strong> to the <strong>Acropolis<\/strong>, significantly above the official fare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The repeated incidents have raised concerns about illegal pricing practices at major transport hubs, where tourists arriving by ferry, bus or plane are particularly vulnerable.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-authorities-step-up-enforcement\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Authorities step up enforcement<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police say inspections will continue throughout the summer, particularly at ports, airports and other busy transport centres, in an effort to protect visitors and safeguard the reputation of Greece\u2019s taxi industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Passengers are reminded that taxi drivers are generally required to operate the taximeter for city journeys.
