For centuries, powerful Maniot families fought fierce blood feuds, using the multi-storey towers to defend themselves against rival clans. Nearby stood the Sanctuary of Poseidon and an ancient oracle where the living sought guidance from the dead.

The stone lighthouse, built in the late 19th century, marks the southernmost point of mainland Greece and one of the southernmost points of continental Europe. In March 1941, nearby waters became the scene of the Battle of Cape Matapan, where British forces under Andrew Cunningham decisively defeated the Italian fleet, sinking three cruisers and two destroyers and claiming the lives of more than 2,300 Italian sailors.

Where legend meets landscape

Few places in Greece combine mythology, history and dramatic scenery as powerfully as Laconian Mani.
