Members of the public visiting the Athens court complex in Ambelokipi faced long queues Monday due to new security measures introduced after an elderly gunman was able to get in and shoot up the premises last month.<\/p>\n

Visitors must now negotiate airport-style x-ray scans to enter the complex, which led to people waiting for up to 45 minutes to get in. The Athens Court of First Instance now has an entrance on Loukareos Street, just off Alexandras Avenue, for members of the public and lawyers. A separate entrance serves members of the judiciary and court employees.<\/p>\n

The tighter security came to replace the practical absence of any security checks that allowed an 89-year-old man armed with a shotgun to walk into the complex on April 28. He headed for an office where he shot four clerks, lightly injuring them in the legs.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the man had shot and lightly injured a civil servant at a social security office in Kerameikos, at the other end of the city center. He was arrested hours later in the western port city of Patra. He said he was upset at having had his application for a state pension rejected.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
