Authorities said Michailidis became unwell because of the tension and aggression, interrupted a scheduled meeting with a delegation from the University of Hong Kong and was taken to AHEPA Hospital. His condition was described as good.

The university administration said the incident was linked to opposition over a new internal regulation governing student dormitories. According to university authorities, the protesters were seeking the cancellation of a unanimous collective decision by the university senate.

The regulation, approved in late March, requires each beneficiary to sign a private agreement stating that rooms will be used only by the resident student for housing and study. It bans the transfer of rooms to others, overnight stays by relatives or other people and visits outside designated common areas. Pets are also prohibited.

The rules additionally ban alcohol consumption in common areas, smoking and vaping. Residents are required to cover the full cost of repairing damages in their rooms and common spaces. To document possible damages, rooms will be videotaped when handed over to residents and inspected again before departure.

“Such phenomena have no place in the public university,” the university administration said. “They express a tiny minority attempting to impose its will through intimidation, insulting human dignity, endangering human life and undermining academic freedom and institutional function.”

Student associations opposing the regulation have described it as an “unreasonable and authoritarian new agreement aimed at the complete disciplining and control of dormitory residents.”

In Athens, members of the self-styled anarchist group Rouvikonas vandalized the apartment building where National and Kapodistrian University professor Vana Nikolaidou-Kyrianidou lives. The professor has repeatedly been targeted over her views, including statements supporting efforts to address the issue of so-called perpetual students, according to the text. No injuries were reported in that incident.

Source link

A vandal belonging to the Rouvikonas group spray-paints a wall in the building where professor Vana Nikolaidou-Kyrianidou lives.
