Thousands of workers and protesters walk off the job across Greece on Friday to mark May Day, demanding higher wages, stronger labor protections and expanded social policies in nationwide demonstrations that disrupt transport and public services.<\/p>\n
The 24-hour strike, called by the country\u2019s main unions \u2013 GSEE and ADEDY \u2013 also draws participation from the Athens Labor Unions Organization (EKA) and the Communist-affiliated PAME.<\/p>\n
A central rally is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Klafthmonos Square, while PAME plans a separate gathering at Syntagma Square 30 minutes earlier, in line with its longstanding tradition.<\/p>\n
Public transport disruptions are widespread. Athens metro services, including the ISAP electric railway, and the tram network are halted for the day, while train services and the suburban railway are also affected. Buses and trolley buses operate on a limited schedule between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Ferry services remain suspended at ports nationwide as seamen join the strike.<\/p>\n
The mobilization reflects growing labor unrest over the cost of living and working conditions. In a statement, ADEDY says the need for collective action is \u201cmore urgent than ever,\u201d calling for justice, democracy and a state that serves society \u201crather than the interests of the few.\u201d<\/p>\n
ADEDY demands the restoration of bonus salaries, wage increases through collective agreements, tax relief measures and the lifting of pay freezes imposed during the decade-long financial crisis. It also calls for mass hiring in public services, increased funding for healthcare, the repeal of anti-labor laws and a halt to privatizations.<\/p>\n
GSEE urges workers to participate widely, describing May Day 2026 as \u201ca reminder that nothing is guaranteed without collective struggle.\u201d The private sector umbrella union emphasizes the need for stronger collective bargaining frameworks, action on the housing crisis and rising prices, and safeguards for workplace health and safety.<\/p>\n
EKA describes May Day as \u201ca living link\u201d between past and present labor struggles, while PAME calls for intensified confrontation with what it describes as the \u201cpower of capital\u201d and an end to exploitation.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
