In the previous year, 54.9% of tax revenue came from VAT and excise duties, while the rest was distributed between income tax and the Single Property Tax (ENFIA).

According to tax administration data, the majority of business activities moved upward, as 79 out of 87 sectors recorded an increase in sales, while only eight experienced a decrease. Among the few exceptions is the production of basic pharmaceutical products and preparations, which moved marginally downward.

A particular boost was recorded in the construction sector, which posted the largest increase in absolute terms, with an increase of 19.7% or €1.1 billion compared to the previous year. This was followed by storage and support activities for transportation with an increase of €900 million, as well as head office and management consulting activities with an increase of €700 million.

Also significant was the strengthening of specialized construction activities (14%), IT services (13.5%), production of basic metals (11.9%) and catering (11.6%), confirming the broad diffusion of growth in different sectors of the economy. At the same time, tourism-related activities, such as accommodation and catering, continued to record strong performances.

Overall, the 20 largest sectors of the economy generated 82.5% of taxable revenues, or €352.03 billion out of a total of €426.95 billion. Wholesale and retail trade dominate, with sales exceeding €102 billion and €63 billion respectively, followed by energy and the food industry.

Notably, almost all leading sectors showed an increase in sales compared to 2024, while half of them also improved their input-output ratio, indicating greater efficiency and strengthening of their productive activity.

The broad recovery in sales reflects the stabilization of economic activity, as well also the new balance that is being formed under conditions of increased cost of living.

Source link

Increased prices, as well as the growth in sales in the economy, were the main drivers of tax revenue in 2025 (mainly VAT), with their total amount increasing by €26.87 billion from 2024.
