European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kovesi held a brief meeting Wednesday with Greek Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis as Greece prepares for a crucial parliamentary vote on lifting immunity for lawmakers linked to a European Union farm subsidies investigation.<\/p>\n
The meeting lasted about 35 minutes and came ahead of Kovesi\u2019s participation in the Delphi Economic Forum on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Later Wednesday, Parliament is set to vote on whether to lift the immunity of 13 lawmakers connected to an EU probe into alleged clientelism in the allocation of agricultural subsidies in 2021 \u2013 a case that has politically strained the conservative government. The outcome will determine whether the European Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office (EPPO) can proceed with the investigation.<\/p>\n
The talks also took place against the backdrop of pending administrative issues involving EPPO operations in Greece, including the renewal of mandates for three European delegated prosecutors and a request to expand the number of posts by three, a proposal previously submitted by Kovesi and accepted by Greek authorities.<\/p>\n
Also present at the meeting were Deputy Justice Minister Ioannis Bougas, Eleni Karkabouna, the lead European delegated prosecutor in Greece and an appeals court prosecutor, and prosecutor Antonis Papamatthaiou.<\/p>\n
According to sources at the Justice Ministry, all outstanding issues raised by the European Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office were \u201cresolved\u201d during the discussions.<\/p>\n
Officials said there was no reference during the meeting to Article 86 of the Greek Constitution, which governs the prosecution of serving or former government ministers. Kovesi had previously highlighted the provision during an earlier visit. However, discussions reportedly included the government\u2019s intention to reintroduce measures aimed at speeding up legal procedures in cases involving political figures.<\/p>\n
The issue of case files being submitted in fragmented form \u2013 something the government says has complicated investigations \u2013 was also reportedly raised during the talks.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
