They were taken to the city of Iraklio.<\/p>\n<p>The boat had set off from Tobruk in eastern Libya, where the migrants had arranged their passage with smugglers.<\/p>\n<p>While long and perilous, the route from Libya to Greece\u2019s southern island of Crete has become one of the main ways for migrants seeking a better life in the EU to reach the continent. This is largely due to instability in Libya and tighter controls along the maritime border with Turkey in the eastern Aegean Sea, which for years provided the shortest and easiest access to Greece by sea.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday\u2019s Coast Guard statement said that five migrants believed to have crossed from the nearby Turkish coast were found on Easter Saturday on the islet of Psara off Chios in the eastern Aegean.<\/p>\n<p>So far this year about 2,300 people have reached Crete from Libya, more than half the total 4,500 migrants who entered the country by sea.
