{"id":14575,"date":"2026-04-15T07:16:56","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T07:16:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in-greece.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/15\/farmers-left-unpaid-over-easter\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T07:16:56","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T07:16:56","slug":"farmers-left-unpaid-over-easter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in-greece.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/15\/farmers-left-unpaid-over-easter\/","title":{"rendered":"Farmers left unpaid over Easter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<p>Thousands of farmers were left without subsidy\u00a0payments over Easter, as only \u20ac202 million was disbursed to 128,063 beneficiaries on Holy Wednesday and Thursday, far short of the roughly \u20ac460 million that should have been distributed by now.<\/p>\n<p>The delays stem from the fact that the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE), which replaced OPEKEPE as the payment agency after the recent scandal, is proceeding cautiously to comply with European legislation.<\/p>\n<p>AADE remains in the evaluation phase before receiving official EU certification as the body responsible for agricultural support payments in Greece.<\/p>\n<p>New Agriculture Minister Margaritis Schinas traveled to Brussels on Tuesday for his first visit in the role, accompanied by AADE chief Giorgos Pitsilis.<\/p>\n<p>The strict controls now in place have postponed many payments until data can be reexamined, slowing procedures and fueling frustration among farmers who argue they are once again penalized for others\u2019 violations and for the state\u2019s inability to distinguish \u201cwho is stealing and who is honest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Satellite images used to verify producers\u2019 declarations identified an estimated 60,000-70,000 potentially false claims.
