Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Monday criticized Greece and Cyprus over their cooperation with Israel, warning it could heighten regional tensions, in an interview with Anadolu news agency.<\/p>\n
\u201cCooperation between Greece, the \u2018Greek Cypriot Administration\u2019 and Israel does not bring more trust, it brings more mistrust. It brings more problems and war,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Fidan argued that Athens is pursuing \u201cextremely dangerous policies,\u201d adding: \u201cThere are very interesting aspects in Greece\u2019s attempt to pursue a kind of policy that no other country in Europe follows alone.\u201d<\/p>\n
He questioned the rationale behind the partnerships, stating: \u201cNeither Greece nor the \u2018Greek Cypriot Administration\u2019 need military cooperation with Israel. Greece is already a member of NATO, and the \u2018Greek Cypriot Administration\u2019 has the support of the EU. What strategic logic could justify seeking this kind of cooperation is something that not even they can explain to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
The minister also claimed that Israel \u201cmay seek to characterize Turkey as a new adversary after Iran, as it cannot survive without an enemy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fidan said Israel\u2019s actions in Lebanon resemble those in Gaza and warned that Israeli strikes in Syria pose a \u201cserious danger\u201d to Turkey. He added that Iran and the United States remain \u201csincere\u201d in pursuing a ceasefire despite no agreement in Saturday\u2019s Pakistan-mediated talks, but cautioned Israel \u201ccould disrupt the peace process.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the Strait of Hormuz, he stressed that military solutions would be complex: \u201cOur position is that it must be reopened through peace.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fidan added Turkey should play a \u201ckey factor\u201d role in shaping Europe\u2019s security framework and said NATO allies should use an upcoming Ankara summit to \u201csystematize NATO-US relations.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
