Konstantinos Karetsas produced one of the moments of Greece’s historic night in Augsburg, leaving German defenders chasing shadows with a spectacular dribble that quickly went viral.
Just moments after Dimitris Kourbelis gave Greece the lead, the 18 year old Konstantinos Karetsas produced a stunning piece of individual skill that had supporters inside the WWK Arena on their feet.
Karetsas collected the ball, drove forward and danced past the German defence with a series of sharp touches and changes of direction.
The move immediately exploded across social media.
Fans compared the teenager’s footwork to some of football’s biggest names, with reactions ranging from “Lionel Karetsas” to references to Neymar, Messi and Juan Román Riquelme.
One viral reaction described it as Karetsas “dancing syrtaki with a German”.
The dribble perfectly captured Greece’s confidence on a night when the national team made history.
Greece shocks Germany
Greece defeated Germany 1 0 in Augsburg to record its first ever victory over Germany.
Kourbelis scored the decisive goal in the 74th minute, while goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis produced crucial saves to protect Greece’s lead.
The result came just days after Greece defeated Serbia 2 1 in Belgrade, giving Ivan Jovanovic’s side six points from its opening two matches.
The early group standings now have Greece on six points, followed by the Netherlands on four, Germany on one and Serbia on zero.
Jovanovic praised his players after the victory, saying that winning matches of this magnitude requires the team to suffer and give everything on the pitch.
The Greek players did exactly that.
And while Kourbelis delivered the historic goal, Karetsas provided one of the night’s most spectacular moments.
At just 18, the Borussia Dortmund youngster is already producing scenes that have Greek supporters dreaming about what could come next.
Greece’s next challenge comes against the Netherlands in Athens on Thursday, October 1.
