Vinnie Gibaldi has been named the winner of MasterChef Australia 2026, taking home the $250,000 prize after defeating fellow Melbourne finalist Petro Papathomas in Sunday night’s grand finale.

The registered nurse edged out the Greek-Cypriot chartered accountant in a two-challenge showdown that included a Mystery Box and a demanding five-hour Pressure Test set by pastry chef Cherish Finden. Judges awarded Vinnie 80 points out of 90, while Petro scored 67 and received $40,000 as runner-up.

How the MasterChef Australia 2026 Grand Finale Unfolded

The final episode saw the last two contestants face:

  • A 75-minute Mystery Box celebrating the season’s guest judges
  • A complex Chinese Afternoon Tea challenge requiring nine intricate petit gateaux

After more than six hours of cooking, Vinnie’s consistency and execution secured the title. Judges Poh Ling Yeow, Andy Allen, Sofia Levin and Jean-Christophe Novelli praised both finalists for their growth throughout the season.

About the Winner – Vinnie Gibaldi

Vinnie Gibaldi, 26, grew up in a large Italian family in Melbourne. Food was central to family life, with his nonna and nonno teaching him traditional Sicilian recipes. His father previously ran a restaurant on Lygon Street.

Outside the kitchen, Vinnie works as a registered nurse, including high-pressure surgical environments. He entered the competition with the dream of opening “Vinnie’s Paninis” and has since spoken about expanding into broader hospitality opportunities.

About the Runner-Up – Petro Papathomas

Petro Papathomas, 30, drew heavily on his Greek-Cypriot heritage, delivering strong Mediterranean flavours and techniques. A chartered accountant by day, he has long dreamed of opening a modern Cypriot restaurant and perfecting his halloumi. Petro reached the Top 3 early after impressing guest judge Meghan Markle.
