A group of vendors selling roasted pork at a summer festival in Pyrgos, Elis, faced a €1,968.75 administrative fine after authorities inspected their outdoor roasting operation on Wednesday evening, Aug. 5.
Investigators from the Fire Investigation Unit for Arson Crimes imposed the fine outside the Spiantza grove in Pyrgos, where the vendors had set up their traditional pork-roasting stands along the main road for the festival celebrating the Feast of the Transfiguration.
According to local reports, authorities inspected the outdoor roasting operation following a complaint.
Although the vendors had taken fire-prevention measures, investigators determined that they had violated existing regulations and imposed the €1,968.75 administrative fine.
The unexpected penalty turned what had been a routine summer festival tradition into a costly evening for the pork sellers.
Outdoor vendors have traditionally set up spits to roast whole pigs during summer festivals in the area, and the practice has continued for years without reported problems.
