Israel’s Foreign Ministry has issued a security advisory to Israelis currently in Greece, urging them to exercise increased caution as anti-Israel demonstrations are expected at 36 locations across the country.
The demonstrations are expected to take place in several areas popular with tourists, with Greece currently in the peak summer travel period and large numbers of Israeli visitors holidaying across the country.
According to the advisory, Israelis in Greece have been urged to avoid demonstrations and large gatherings and to distance themselves from any confrontations with protesters.
The ministry has also advised Israeli citizens to keep Israeli and Jewish identifying symbols discreet and avoid drawing unnecessary attention to their identity in areas where demonstrations are taking place.
Israeli travellers have additionally been urged not to share their location in real time on social media, as a precautionary security measure.
The demonstrations have been described by organisers as a “day of rage” over the war in Gaza and are expected to take place in multiple locations across Greece.
The warning comes as Greece experiences one of its busiest periods of the tourism season, with popular destinations across the mainland and Greek islands welcoming visitors from around the world.
Israeli tourists are a significant presence in Greece during the summer, with destinations including Athens, Crete, Rhodes, Kos and several of the country’s popular islands attracting Israeli holidaymakers.
The Foreign Ministry’s advisory does not call on Israelis to leave Greece but instead encourages them to remain vigilant, avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and follow instructions from local authorities.
Greek authorities routinely deploy additional police resources around major demonstrations and tourist areas when large gatherings are expected.
Travellers in Greece are advised to remain aware of their surroundings, avoid confrontational situations and follow any instructions issued by Greek security authorities.
