A helicopter has sparked outrage after landing at Sarakiniko, one of the most recognisable beaches on the Greek island of Milos, reportedly so its passengers could stop for a swim.
The unusual incident was captured on video by a businessman on the island, with footage showing the helicopter at the iconic white-rock beach while its passengers reportedly enjoyed a dip in the sea.
Speaking to Greek broadcaster SKAI, the man who recorded the footage expressed disbelief at what he had witnessed.
“We don’t know what to expect tomorrow, in this much-desired place. A gentleman came with his company to take a bath,” he said.
The incident has renewed concerns about the growing pressure placed on some of Greece’s most popular natural attractions during the peak summer tourism season.
Sarakiniko is famous for its dramatic white volcanic rock formations, turquoise waters and distinctive lunar-like landscape, making it one of Milos’ most photographed destinations.
The witness also questioned whether stronger measures are needed to protect the area from increasingly intrusive tourism activity.
“At some point a way of protection will have to be found. Sarakiniko is not a protected area and it should be,” he said.
The helicopter landing has raised questions over the rules governing access to Sarakiniko and whether aircraft are permitted to land at the beach under the circumstances seen in the footage.
The incident comes as Greece continues to grapple with the challenge of managing visitor numbers and protecting its most popular natural and cultural sites from the pressures of mass tourism.
With Sarakiniko attracting thousands of visitors each summer, calls for greater protection of the iconic landscape are likely to intensify following the incident.
