The first “snakes of the Virgin Mary” have appeared in Kefalonia ahead of the Feast of the Dormition, continuing one of the island’s most distinctive religious and folkloric traditions.
Three snakes have reportedly been spotted so far this year, with one appearing at the Holy Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Markopoulo and two others discovered in Arginia.
The first sightings have brought excitement to the local communities, with church bells in Arginia ringing in celebration after the snakes were discovered.
The annual appearance of the snakes is closely associated with the days leading up to August 15, when Orthodox Christians celebrate the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.
A tradition that begins after August 6
According to local custom, the search for the snakes begins after August 6, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Savior.
Residents of Markopoulo and Arginia traditionally know the areas around their churches and villages where the snakes are most likely to appear. Each year, locals begin searching these locations in anticipation of the unusual phenomenon.
With more than a week remaining until the Feast of the Dormition, residents say further sightings could follow in the coming days.
A centuries-old Kefalonian tradition
The “snakes of the Virgin Mary” have become one of Kefalonia’s best-known religious and cultural traditions, drawing visitors who want to witness the phenomenon for themselves.
The snakes are particularly associated with the churches of Panagia Lagouvarda in Markopoulo and Panagia in Arginia. Local tradition attributes a special religious significance to their appearance during the days surrounding August 15.
Despite the strong spiritual significance attached to the tradition by many locals, the Greek Orthodox Church has not officially declared the appearance of the snakes to be a miracle.
For the people of Kefalonia, however, their annual appearance remains a deeply rooted part of the island’s cultural and religious identity — and one of the most anticipated signs that the celebrations for the Dormition of the Virgin Mary are approaching.
