A 27-year-old Greek trap artist has been handed a suspended prison sentence that can be converted into a monetary fine after being caught driving at 182 km/h on Greece’s PATHE motorway, exceeding the speed limit by 102 km/h.
The Thessaloniki Single-Member Misdemeanours Court sentenced the performer to one year in prison, convertible to a fine of €15 per day, and suspended his driver’s licence for four months.
During his court appearance, the 27-year-old admitted his actions and apologised.
“I am sorry,” he told the court, according to Greek public broadcaster ERT.
Claimed medical emergency prompted speeding
In his defence, the rapper said he had received a phone call informing him that someone close to him was experiencing a serious medical emergency.
He told the court he accelerated in an effort to reach the person as quickly as possible.
Prosecutors charged him with dangerous driving after police allegedly recorded his vehicle travelling at 182 km/h on the PATHE motorway, one of Greece’s busiest highways.
Following Wednesday’s hearing, the defendant lodged an appeal against the sentence and was released pending the outcome of the appeal.
The case has reignited debate over dangerous driving and speeding on Greece’s national road network, with authorities continuing to warn motorists that excessive speed remains one of the leading causes of fatal traffic accidents.
