Eastern Mediterranean tensions are rising again as Turkish media revive rhetoric accusing Athens and Nicosia of “provocations.”
The trigger is recent progress in Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), specifically the decision by energy majors Eni and TotalEnergies, working with the Republic of Cyprus, to develop Block 6. The project is seen as strategically important for Europe’s energy security. Ankara views it as an effort to constrain Turkey’s regional role.
Turkish media coverage and military framing
Pro-government outlet aHaber has described the situation as “hot waters,” claiming Turkey is on heightened alert to defend its interests and those of Turkish Cypriots. Correspondent İlhan Tahsin said work on Block 6 risks sparking a new round of confrontation. He repeated Ankara’s longstanding claims that challenge Cyprus’s sovereign rights in Blocks 4, 5, 6, and 7.
Turkish reporting also stresses a military angle, suggesting Italian and French warships could escort or protect operations as activity begins. At the same time, it highlights the Turkish Navy’s readiness and its ability to rapidly deploy forces from the Aksaz naval base—part of Turkey’s pattern of pairing energy developments with shows of military strength.
The “encirclement” narrative versus energy realities
Turkish outlets emphasize Ankara’s concern that a regional energy corridor is taking shape without Turkish participation. Plans call for piping natural gas from Cyprus’s EEZ undersea to Egypt for liquefaction at LNG facilities and subsequent export to Europe. This would bolster the strategic positions of Nicosia and Cairo while bypassing Turkey.
As a result, Turkish media have revived the familiar “encirclement” narrative, portraying a broad alignment of Greece, Cyprus, Israel, and Western partners aimed at sidelining Turkey.
