Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis appears to have settled on a Spring 2027 date for the next general election.
While Mitsotakis has consistently maintained this timeline, a sitting prime minister is unlikely to publicly entertain the idea of an early vote. Behind the scenes, however, he has carefully weighed the tactical advantages of different election timings — particularly as two new parties have entered the political arena and a third may soon follow.
Mitsotakis calculates that delaying the vote will expose the limited electoral appeal of both PASOK and Alexis Tsipras’ Greek Left Alliance (ELAS), which currently ranks second in most recent opinion polls. He also hopes that Maria Karystianou’s Hope for Democracy party — once viewed as a potential contender for second place but now plagued by internal dysfunction — may further weaken or even collapse if given more time.
A later election would also allow the government to deliver more tangible results through completed infrastructure and other projects that could resonate with voters. Maintaining the Spring 2027 date reinforces Mitsotakis’ image as a leader who keeps his word, avoids tactical manoeuvres, and does not vacillate under pressure.
On the other side, New Democracy MPs and even ministers are already operating in campaign mode. Some newer ministers, appointed in competitive multi-seat constituencies, have been actively promoting their government achievements — a development that has irritated more established colleagues within the party.
