A Greek company based in Chania, Crete, is placing the country firmly on the international map of armed unmanned aerial systems. Altus LSA has developed the Kerveros, an unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) that combines a heavy-lift multicopter platform with precision anti-tank missiles.
The Kerveros is built on Altus’s Atlas 8 heavy-lift octocopter. In partnership with European missile manufacturer MBDA, the system carries two Akeron MP (formerly MMP) multi-purpose guided missiles. These 5th-generation weapons offer a range exceeding 4 km and feature a tandem warhead designed to defeat modern armored vehicles, including those protected by explosive reactive armor, as well as fortified structures.
The electric version of the Atlas 8 platform can lift roughly 40–50 kg of payload with a flight time of around 30–35 minutes and a range of about 30 km. A hybrid-electric variant under development will significantly increase endurance (to 3–4 hours) and payload capacity (up to 100 kg), expanding the system’s operational flexibility.
Kerveros was publicly unveiled at the Euronaval 2024 exhibition in Paris. Since then it has undergone progressive testing, including inert firing trials at the NAMFI range on Crete and participation in the Hellenic Army’s “Aisios Oionos–25” exercise in Evros. During that exercise the UCAV performed tactical maneuvers, target designation, and mock firings while carrying two Akeron MP systems, demonstrating both payload capacity and interoperability.
According to recent reports, Altus is working toward delivery of the first systems to an undisclosed customer by the end of 2026 for operational evaluation. The company has already ordered multiple platforms (each typically consisting of two aircraft plus a ground control station).
Altus LSA itself has gained growing international recognition. The firm, founded by the Sarris family and specializing in dual-use unmanned systems, ranks among the world’s top 100 UAV manufacturers according to The Defense Post. Its platforms have been used by the Hellenic Armed Forces, NATO, Frontex, EMSA, and other international organizations for surveillance, logistics, and support missions.
The appearance of an indigenously developed, missile-armed UCAV marks a qualitative step for the Greek defense industry. It moves the country beyond pure surveillance or target-drone roles into the domain of precision strike from unmanned platforms—an increasingly important capability in modern warfare. Through the Kerveros program, Altus is demonstrating that Greek engineering can deliver operationally relevant armed unmanned systems in cooperation with leading European partners.
