Authorities inaugurated a new desalination facility on the Cycladic island of Amorgos on Sunday, aiming to secure and strengthen the island’s water supply amid rising demand from both residents and tourists.
The plant, located near the island’s main port of Katapola, was officially opened by Maritime and Insular Policy Minister Vasilis Kikilias alongside local officials. It has a daily production capacity of 1,050 cubic meters of drinking water.
During the inauguration, Minister Kikilias highlighted the growing challenges of water resource management for Greece’s islands, especially under the pressures of climate change and increasing tourism.
“We are obliged to plan for the future and consider what infrastructure our islands need so they can withstand challenges and play a leading role over the next 25 years,” Kikilias said. “Until there is perhaps another new technology in this direction, we will continue to strengthen our islands.”
The new desalination unit is expected to significantly alleviate water scarcity issues on Amorgos, particularly during the peak summer season.
