Mediterranean Diet May Activate Tiny Proteins That Protect the Heart and Brain – Greek City Times


New scientific research is shedding light on why the Mediterranean diet — a cornerstone of Greek culinary tradition — is so effective at protecting health, revealing a fascinating connection to tiny proteins inside our cells’ mitochondria.

According to a study led by researchers at the University of Southern California (USC) Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, following a Mediterranean-style eating pattern may activate protective microproteins that help cells resist damage, reduce inflammation, and slow aspects of the aging process.

Mitochondria, often called the powerhouses of the cell, not only produce energy but also release important chemical signals that influence metabolism, stress responses, and longevity. The study found that older adults who closely adhered to the Mediterranean diet had significantly higher blood levels of two key mitochondrial microproteins: humanin and SHMOOSE. Both have been previously linked to protection against cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration, and age-related decline.

“These microproteins may act as molecular messengers that translate what we eat into how our cells function and age,” said lead researcher Roberto Vicinanza, instructional associate professor of gerontology at USC. “It’s a new biological pathway that helps explain why the Mediterranean diet is so powerful.”

Traditional Greek Foods Shine in the Study

The Mediterranean diet, rich in olive oil, fish, legumes, fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts, has long been celebrated for its health benefits. The new findings suggest that specific components — particularly olive oil, fish, and legumes — are strongly associated with elevated levels of these protective microproteins.

Participants with the highest adherence also showed lower levels of oxidative stress, a major driver of cellular damage linked to heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and premature aging.

Senior author Pinchas Cohen, Dean of the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, noted:

“These findings suggest that specific components of the Mediterranean diet may directly influence mitochondrial biology. Humanin and SHMOOSE could serve as biomarkers for adherence to the Mediterranean diet and have clinical significance.”

Humanin, first discovered by Cohen’s team in 2003, has been associated with improved insulin sensitivity, cardiovascular protection, and better cognitive function. SHMOOSE has shown promise in protecting neurons from damage related to Alzheimer’s disease.

A Cultural and Scientific Victory for Greece

The research adds powerful molecular evidence to what Greeks have practiced for generations — a way of eating that honours both tradition and health. Olive oil, central to the Greek table, emerged as particularly beneficial.

Roberto Vicinanza has been a strong advocate for the Mediterranean diet’s global recognition, collaborating with the Municipality of Pollica in Italy — a UNESCO emblematic community — to establish the International Day of the Mediterranean Diet at the United Nations, observed annually on November 16.

“We’re connecting centuries-old dietary traditions with cutting-edge molecular biology,” Vicinanza said. “It supports the idea that healthy eating patterns with little to no ultra-processed foods reflect how humans have eaten over long periods.”

While the study is observational and more research is needed to establish direct causality, the findings open exciting possibilities for precision nutrition and deeper understanding of how traditional Greek and Mediterranean foods support healthy aging at the cellular level.

The study, titled “Mediterranean diet adherence is associated with mitochondrial microproteins Humanin and SHMOOSE,” was published in Frontiers in Nutrition.
