Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem has met with U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee to discuss the growing challenges facing Christians in the Holy Land, including humanitarian concerns in Gaza, restrictions on pilgrimages, and the protection of Church property.
The meeting took place at the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate’s headquarters in Jerusalem’s Old City, where the two also exchanged views on the wider humanitarian and religious situation in the region.
During the talks, Patriarch Theophilos appealed for U.S. support in establishing a humanitarian medical corridor that would allow cancer patients from Gaza, including children, to receive treatment at Augusta Victoria Hospital in Jerusalem. He reiterated the Church’s longstanding commitment to providing care and relief to those suffering, regardless of background.
The Patriarch also expressed concern over restrictions affecting clergy and pilgrims travelling to Mount Tabor ahead of the upcoming Feast of the Transfiguration, one of the most significant celebrations in the Orthodox Christian calendar.
In addition, he raised concerns over the June seizure of Patriarchate-owned property in Jerusalem’s Silwan neighbourhood by Israeli authorities and criticised what he described as the unequal application of Arnona municipal property taxes on Christian churches.
The discussion also touched on Patriarch Theophilos’ efforts to promote dialogue and reconciliation between Russia and Ukraine. He said the Church continues to support peaceful engagement and expressed hope that continued dialogue could contribute to a just and lasting peace.
The meeting underscored the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate’s ongoing advocacy for the rights of Christians in the Holy Land, the protection of historic Church properties, and improved humanitarian access for vulnerable communities amid continuing regional tensions.
