The European Union’s new high-tech border control system has encountered an unexpected challenge: identical twins.
The Entry/Exit System (EES), which is being introduced across the Schengen Area, relies on biometric data—including facial recognition and fingerprints—to register travellers from non-EU countries. While the technology is designed to strengthen border security and streamline passport checks, officials have acknowledged that it can struggle to distinguish between identical twins.
According to EU officials, the facial recognition software may incorrectly match one twin with another because of their near-identical facial features. Although fingerprint verification provides an additional layer of security and usually resolves the issue, travellers who are identical twins could still experience delays or require manual checks at border crossings.
The EES will replace passport stamping with a digital system that records travellers’ entries and exits, helping authorities detect overstays and improve border management across participating countries.
The issue highlights one of the limitations of biometric technology, despite its growing use at airports and border checkpoints worldwide. Experts note that while facial recognition has become increasingly accurate, identical twins remain among its most difficult challenges.
The EU has stressed that the system uses multiple biometric identifiers rather than relying solely on facial recognition, reducing the likelihood of mistaken identity.
The Entry/Exit System is expected to be rolled out gradually across EU member states and is one of the bloc’s biggest border management reforms in decades. It will affect millions of travellers entering the Schengen Area each year, including visitors from countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada.
