A major retrospective exhibition dedicated to the life and work of distinguished Lefkadian painter Themistoklis Karfakis (1924–2014) will open on Monday, 20 July 2026, at the Th. Stamos Art Gallery in Lefkada.
Titled “Terra Femina | Γη Γυναικός” (Earth of Woman), the exhibition focuses on the central role of female figures — both real and mythical — in Karfakis’ artistic universe. Curated by Fani Koulocheri and Anthee Sterghiou, it presents the artist’s vision of woman as a timeless symbol of identity, memory, and strength, unbound by age, society, or culture.
The exhibition, organized by the Karfakis Archive and Family, will run from 20 to 30 July 2026. The official opening reception will take place on Monday, 20 July, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Themistoklis Karfakis was born in Asprogerakata, Lefkada, in 1924. Admitted with distinction to the Athens School of Fine Arts in 1950, he was forced to abandon his formal studies and became a self-taught artist. A member of the Greek Resistance from the age of 17, he maintained a contemplative and principled spirit throughout his life and career.
Karfakis exhibited extensively in Greece and abroad, participating in over 50 exhibitions in Greece and more than 300 internationally. His works are held in museums in Greece and Cyprus, as well as in numerous private collections worldwide. He spent the final years of his life painting in his beloved Lefkada, where he passed away in 2014 at the age of 91.
