BREAKING: Israel has suspended a planned Knesset vote on formally recognizing the Armenian Genocide, just weeks after the Israeli Cabinet unanimously approved the proposal.
With the Knesset set to enter its summer recess and national elections scheduled for October 27, the legislation is now unlikely to move forward anytime soon.
The delay comes as Israel seeks to improve relations with Turkey. Ankara condemned the Cabinet’s decision as politically motivated, while Azerbaijan also called on Israel to reverse course.
The development has fuelled claims that recognition of the Armenian Genocide is being used as a diplomatic bargaining chip rather than a matter of historical principle. Meanwhile, the Armenian government has remained largely silent despite continued opposition from both Turkey and Azerbaijan.
