Belgian Crypto Fraud Fugitive Arrested at Athens Airport

Greek police arrested a 45-year-old man wanted by Belgian authorities over alleged cryptocurrency fraud at Athens International Airport before he could board a flight to Cyprus.

Officers from the Athens Airport Police Directorate’s Security Department arrested the foreign national on the morning of July 10, 2026, at the departures level of Athens International Airport.

Belgian authorities had issued a European Arrest Warrant against the 45-year-old for alleged participation in a criminal organisation, fraud and money laundering.

Authorities accuse the man of joining an internationally active criminal organisation in 2023 that allegedly carried out cryptocurrency scams by presenting victims with fraudulent investment opportunities.

Investigators allege the 45-year-old acted as an “account manager” for the organisation. In that role, he allegedly contacted prospective victims and guided them through their supposed cryptocurrency investments.

The criminal operation allegedly generated more than €160,000 in financial gains through the fraudulent scheme.

Police brought the arrested man before the competent prosecutorial authority.
