Fourteen revamped trains first used in 1985 will gradually join the Athens metro fleet starting this summer and ending in 2027.
They will be exclusively used on Line 1 (Piraeus-Kifissia), the system’s oldest, that is widely plagued by delays, overcrowding and, as importantly in a city with a long, hot summer, lack of air conditioning. The revamped fleet is free of graffiti and will feature modernized conductor cabins and digital info displays.
The project is behind schedule and the government has slapped Spain’s Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF), which is revamping the trains at a Volos facility in central Greece, with a €3.8 million fine.
