European Union foreign ministers have expressed concern during the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels over the discovery of a drone boat off the Greek island of Lefkada, according to Greek diplomatic sources.
Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis briefed his counterparts on the incident, with several ministers requesting updates once the Greek investigation is completed and expressing support for Greece.
The unmanned vessel, identified as a Ukrainian-made Magura V3 unmanned surface vehicle (USV) reportedly equipped with three detonators, was transferred on Friday to a mainland naval base for further examination.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the meeting, Gerapetritis said Greek authorities were continuing their investigation and planned to submit a formal diplomatic demarche after the inquiry concludes.
“Greece will take all necessary steps to ensure that the Mediterranean does not become a theater of military operations,” he said, warning that such incidents pose risks to freedom of navigation, civilian safety and the environment.
