Disgruntled Lesvos farmers to protest over foot-and-mouth

Livestock farmers on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos are planning a new protest rally on Monday at the local branch of the General Secretariat of the Aegean, vowing to escalate mobilizations over the impact of foot-and-mouth disease and what they describe as inadequate government support.

The decision followed a meeting last week organized by the Federation of Agricultural Associations of Lesvos. It was attended, among others, by Rizos Maroudas, a leading figure in Greece’s nationwide farmers’ protest movement, who expressed support for affected producers and called for coordinated pressure on the government.

Farmers are demanding full compensation for culled livestock, income support, state-funded herd restoration, expanded biosecurity measures and a vaccination program to protect local breeds.
