Nine governing New Democracy lawmakers received summons Wednesday from European prosecutors to testify over their alleged involvement in the OPEKEPE farming subsidies fraud scandal.

Initially confusion reigned as the documents reportedly referred to their potential involvement in criminal offences, while the violations that have been made public are misdemeanors.

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office reportedly attributed the phrasing to a mistake, and sent new, corrected versions.

The lawmakers have been summoned to provide testimony on May 22.

The scandal concerns the criteria used by the now-defunct Greek state OPEKEPE agency to award European Union farm subsidies to applicants, many of whom allegedly had no right to them and were selected on the strength of their political connections.
