Animal welfare group appeals for witnesses after abused dog dies

Beba was blinded in one eye, had her jaw and ear broken, and suffered a dislocated leg, among other injuries. Despite the best efforts of the Samos Animal Welfare Association and veterinarians in Halkida, she did not make it.

The Samos Animal Welfare Association on Wednesday said that a dog found severely abused on the eastern Aegean island of Samos died from her injuries after a two-week struggle for survival.

The female dog, estimated to be about 12 years old and weighing just 9 kilograms (20 pounds), was discovered on April 23 in the Avanti area near Spatharaioi village by a local resident, according to the animal welfare group.

Volunteers who rushed the animal to a veterinary clinic said the full extent of the abuse became clear during medical examinations. Veterinarians determined that the injuries had been inflicted by a person, the group said.

The animal, later named Beba, or Baby Girl, by volunteers caring for her, had lost her left eye and suffered fractures to her lower jaw and skull, severe trauma to her right ear and a dislocated rear left leg, according to veterinary examinations.

Volunteers initially treated the dog on Samos before she was transferred to a veterinary polyclinic in Halkida on Evia for specialized care.

“Beba fought valiantly for 15 days, enduring unbearable pain that few could withstand,” the animal welfare group said in a social media post. “Doctors did everything humanly possible, first on Samos and later in Halkida. Unfortunately, it was not enough.”

The organization described the case as a “deliberate and brutal abuse,” saying the attack should be treated as a killing rather than a simple case of animal abuse. The group has appealed for witnesses or anyone with information that could help identify the perpetrator to come forward and contact authorities.

The investigation into the abuse is ongoing, and a case file has been opened by Greek authorities.
